Karen Harvey
Karen Harvey
is a student of Florida history who writes about it and talks about it
as much she reads about it. She holds an MA in experimental psychology
but found her passion and her home in St. Augustine twenty-five years
ago.
Harvey is the author of St. Augustine and St. Johns County: A Pictorial
History, a popular coffee-table publication now in its seventh printing.
While that endeavor was in production she worked on the Florida Master
Site File for the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board. Results of
the survey of historic sites and houses can be read in Harvey’s
book America’s First City: St.
Augustine’s Historic Neighborhoods.
Daring Daughters: St. Augustine’s
Feisty Females, a publication out in July 2000, captured the essence of
women often forgotten in the annals of history. Additional available works
include Oldest Ghosts, a fun read about spiritual activity. Harvey’s
play Conquest and Colonization ran for five spring seasons from 1996 through
2000 entertaining school and tour groups with the story of the founding
of St. Augustine and the settlement of Florida.
She was the arts and entertainment editor for the St. Augustine Record
for seven years before becoming a tour guide and now a tour company operator.
She lives in St. Augustine, Florida, with her husband and two adult children.
Willet A. Boyer
Willet A. Boyer,
III is a seventh-generation Native Floridian from Weirsdale, Florida,
near Ocala. He holds a doctorate in law from the University of Florida
and is currently working on a second doctorate in Florida archaeology.
When not on a dig or giving tours, he's
likely to be found reading, exploring the woods, or spending time with
Josie to whom he was recently married.
Nancy Porter
Nancy Porter was quickly captivated by the
unique history of St. Augustine and Florida when she was transplanted
to the oldest city in 2000. She holds an MA in Spanish Linguistics and,
after having lived in many locales throughout the United States, found
her niche in historically Spanish St. Augustine.
Porter had a 17-year career with Dow Chemical
in Houston, Texas, holding positions in engineering administration, cost
analysis, and planning and scheduling. When she moved to St. Augustine,
she became a tour guide at Memorial Presbyterian Church, a sanctuary built
by oil tycoon Henry M. Flagler and the only example of Venetian Renaissance
architecture in the United States. This awakened in Porter the sense of
history that exists in St. Augustine. She broadened her scope by becoming
a tour guide with Tour Saint Augustine, Inc., leading adult and school
groups on walking tours throughout the old city.
In late 2002
Porter, along with fellow tour guides Karen Harvey and Willet Boyer, formed
North Florida Tours LLC, specializing in customized adult tours not only
of St. Augustine, but also Jacksonville, Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach,
and other historic sites in north Florida. Porter is the financial officer
of the partnership, tapping her years of experience in cost analysis and
planning and scheduling.
Porter lives in St.
Augustine with her two cats.
